How Tip Math Works

Tip amount

Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100)

Example: $60 bill at 20% → $60 × 0.20 = $12.00 tip

Total bill

Total = Bill + Tip

Example: $60 + $12 = $72.00 total

Per-person split

Per person = Total ÷ People

Example: $72.00 ÷ 3 = $24.00 each

Round up trick

Total = ⌈Bill + Tip⌉

Rounds the final total up to the nearest dollar — slightly increases the tip for clean cash payment.

Quick mental math: Double the first digit of your bill for a rough 20% tip. On a $47 bill, double 4 = $8 — close to the exact $9.40. Adjust up or down from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100. Example: 20% tip on a $45.00 bill = $45.00 × 0.20 = $9.00 tip. Total = $45.00 + $9.00 = $54.00. Use the calculator above for instant results.
What is the standard tip percentage at a restaurant?
15% is the traditional minimum for acceptable service. 18–20% is the current US standard for good service. 25% or more is appropriate for exceptional service. For takeout, 10–15% is common. For delivery, 15–20% on top of any delivery fee is standard.
How do I split a bill evenly between multiple people?
Enter the total bill amount, choose your tip percentage, then set "Split Between" to the number of people. The calculator shows each person's share of both the tip and the total. For example, a $120 bill with 18% tip ($21.60) split 4 ways = $35.40 per person.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax (subtotal) amount is the traditional standard and technically correct — the server did not provide the service of collecting tax. However, in practice many people tip on the post-tax total since the difference is small and the math is simpler. Either is acceptable.
What does the "round up total" option do?
Enabling "round up total to nearest dollar" adjusts the tip slightly upward so the final bill is a whole dollar amount. This makes it easier to pay with cash or split evenly. Example: a $47.80 total rounds up to $48.00, increasing the tip by $0.20.
How much do I tip at a hotel, salon, or taxi?
Tipping norms vary by service: hotel housekeeping $2–5 per night, bellhop $1–2 per bag, valet $2–5; hair salons and barbers 15–20%; taxi and rideshare 15–20%; spa and massage 15–20%; food delivery 15–20% of order total. Enter the service charge in the bill field and pick the appropriate percentage.
