How does this internet speed test work?▾
The test runs entirely in your browser and measures how fast data moves between your device and Cloudflare's global network. It downloads and uploads a series of payloads, times them, and reports your download and upload throughput along with ping (latency) and jitter. Nothing is installed and no account is needed.
What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?▾
Mbps means megabits per second and is how internet plans are advertised. MB/s means megabytes per second and is what you usually see when downloading a file. There are 8 bits in a byte, so MB/s = Mbps divided by 8. For example, a 100 Mbps connection downloads at about 12.5 MB/s. This tool shows both so you do not have to convert.
What is a good internet speed?▾
For general browsing and HD streaming, 25 to 50 Mbps is comfortable. For 4K streaming, video calls, and a few devices at once, 100 Mbps or more is ideal. Households with many devices or heavy uploads (creators, remote work with large files) benefit from 300 Mbps and up. Upload speed matters most for video calls, cloud backups, and streaming to others.
What are ping and jitter, and why do they matter?▾
Ping (latency) is how long a small packet takes to make a round trip, measured in milliseconds. Lower is better. Jitter is the variation in ping over time. High ping or jitter causes lag in games and choppy video calls even when your download speed looks high. For gaming, a ping under about 50 ms with low jitter feels responsive.
Why is my speed test result lower than my plan?▾
Several things reduce real-world speed: Wi-Fi distance and interference, an older router, other devices using bandwidth, VPNs, the website or server you connect to, and network congestion at peak hours. For the most accurate reading of your line, test over a wired Ethernet connection close to the router with other devices idle.
Does the speed test use my data?▾
Yes. Any speed test has to send and receive real data to measure throughput, so it consumes some of your data allowance, similar to downloading a few large photos or a short video. On a metered or mobile plan, keep that in mind before running repeated tests.
How can I get a more accurate result?▾
Use a wired Ethernet connection if possible, or sit close to your router. Pause downloads, streaming, and cloud backups on other devices. Close bandwidth-heavy browser tabs. Run the test two or three times and take the best result, since a single run can be affected by momentary congestion.
