How do dynamic QR codes work?

A dynamic QR code is a QR code that encodes a short redirect link you control (for example toolember.com/r/aB3xk2Q), instead of the final URL. When someone scans it, they are forwarded to whatever destination you have set. You can change that destination as often as you like without touching the printed code.

This makes dynamic codes ideal for anything printed or long-lived: restaurant menus, packaging, flyers, business cards, event signage, and product labels. Fix a typo, swap a campaign landing page, or point to a new promotion, all without reprinting. The QR pattern itself follows the international ISO/IEC 18004 symbology specification, so any scanner can read it regardless of which generator made it.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

Static

The URL is baked into the code. Free and permanent, but changing the link means generating and reprinting a new code. Best for one-off or personal links.

Dynamic

The code points to a short link you own. Edit the destination anytime and see scan counts. Best for printed, commercial, or campaign use. Need a plain code? Use the static QR generator.

One code, different destinations per scanner

Open Routing on any code and add rules: iPhone scanners to the App Store, Android to Google Play, desktops to your website, or a split by country. Rules run top to bottom, the first match wins, and anything unmatched falls back to the code's own destination. It is on the free plan too, not just Pro.

The common case has a one-click preset. It is also the free replacement for the part of Firebase Dynamic Links that people actually used, since that service shut down in August 2025. One caveat worth stating up front: this is platform routing, so it sends a scanner to the right store or page, but it does not open a specific screen inside an app that is already installed and it does not attribute installs. Where dynamic QR codes pay off

Menu boards and table cards, swap a seasonal special or pull a sold-out item without reprinting every table tent.
Product packaging, keep the same packaging in circulation across a multi-month print run while the landing page underneath changes for a new promotion or region.
Event signage, point attendees to the current schedule or livestream link, then repoint the same signs to a post-event survey once the event wraps.
Business cards and flyers, fix a typo or update a portfolio link without discarding the print run.

Each of these breaks with a static code, since the destination is baked into the image at print time. A dynamic code separates the printed artifact from the destination, so the print run and the content behind it can change independently.

What happens if you cancel

Your codes keep redirecting, permanently. Several QR services deactivate dynamic codes when a plan lapses, which turns a print run into waste. Yours keep working. Above the free limit the oldest 10,000 stay editable and the rest become read-only, but every one of them keeps resolving.
Cancel yourself, anytime, from the billing portal. You keep Pro until the period you already paid for ends. There is no prorated refund for that period, which is standard, so cancelling on day two of a month still gives you the month.
14-day money back. Different thing from cancelling: email us inside 14 days and we refund it, no reasons needed. Cancelling stops future billing, a refund returns money, and only we can issue one.
Your scan history survives. Data keeps being recorded on the free plan, so if you come back the report is not empty.
Prices are before tax. Polar is the merchant of record, so any VAT or sales tax your country charges is calculated and added at checkout, then filed and remitted for you. A US card pays $5, a UK one pays $5 plus VAT.

Codes outlive the relationship. A dynamic QR is only as durable as whoever runs the redirect, which is a fair thing to worry about with a young service before you print a thousand of something. Do I need an account?▾

No. Your codes are tied to your browser through a private edit key stored locally. Anyone can scan a code, but only the browser that created it can change the destination. If you clear your site data you can still scan your codes but will no longer be able to edit them.

Will my QR code stop working if I hit a scan limit?▾

No. Unlike some tools that disable your code once a scan cap is reached, the free plan here has unlimited scans. Your codes keep redirecting as long as they exist.

Can I edit the destination after printing?▾

Yes, that is the whole point of a dynamic QR code. Paste a new URL into the destination field and press Update. The printed code stays the same but now forwards to the new address instantly.

How is scan tracking counted?▾

Each scan increments the counter for that code. The free plan shows the total, the first and last scan time, and a breakdown by country and device. Link-preview fetchers from chat apps and social crawlers are counted separately, so pasting your short link into a group chat does not inflate the number. Every scan is recorded in full from the moment a code exists, so the paid plan adds unique visitors, city, OS, a daily chart, which routing rule matched, and a CSV export of the raw events, over history that was already being collected rather than an empty chart.

Can I use dynamic QR codes commercially?▾

Yes. The generated QR image is a standard ISO/IEC 18004 code you can print on packaging, menus, flyers, or signage for personal or commercial use with no restrictions.

The free plan creates URL dynamic codes, and those can still use device and country routing.
