How to Change a QR Code's Destination After Printing

You can only change where a printed QR code points if it is dynamic. How to tell which you have, the steps when it is dynamic, and the three fixes when it is static.

Printing something new? Make it dynamic first and the next change costs nothing. Create a free dynamic QR code.

First, check whether yours is dynamic

Everything depends on one fact: where the destination lives. In a static code it is printed into the pattern. In a dynamic code the pattern holds a short link, and the destination is a setting stored behind that link.

Scan the printed code and read the address your phone shows before you open it. A short link on the generator's domain means dynamic. Your own page address means static.

If it is dynamic: change the destination

  1. Open the service that made the code, in the same browser if you made it without an account.
  2. Find the code in your list.
  3. Type the new address into its destination field.
  4. Save, then scan the printed code once to confirm.

On Toolember the code appears under "Your dynamic QR codes". Change the field labelled "Destination, editable anytime" and press Update. Nothing is reprinted and every copy keeps working.

If it is static: three fixes

  • Redirect the old address. If you own the website the code points to, set up a redirect from the old page to the new one. This costs nothing and works for every printed copy, but only if you control the old address.
  • Cover it with a new code. Generate the correct code and stick it over the old one. Quick for a handful of items, awkward for thousands.
  • Reprint. The reliable option, and the expensive one.

There is no way to turn an already printed static code into a dynamic one. The only route is a new code, which is why the choice is worth making before anything goes to print. The difference is explained in static versus dynamic QR codes.

Keeping access to a dynamic code

A dynamic code is only editable by whoever owns it. A Toolember code made without an account is tied to the browser that created it, so clearing that browser's data can cost you edit access. Sign in once and the code is saved to your account and editable from any device. If the service shuts down or you lose the account, the destination can no longer be changed, so pick a provider you expect to still be there in a few years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change the link in a QR code that is already printed?▾
Only if it is a dynamic code. A dynamic code points to a short link you control, so you change the destination of that link and the printed pattern stays the same. A static code has the final address built into the pattern, so the only fixes are redirecting the old address, covering it with a sticker, or reprinting.
How do I tell whether my QR code is static or dynamic?▾
Scan it and read the address before opening it. If it is a short link on the generator's own domain, for example toolember.com/r/ followed by a few characters, it is dynamic. If it is your own page address, it is static.
What if I lost access to the account that made the code?▾
Then the destination cannot be edited, because only the owner can change a dynamic code. Toolember codes made without an account are tied to the browser that created them, so clearing that browser's data can cost you edit access unless you signed in. Sign in once so the code is saved to your account.
Does changing the destination change the printed code?▾
No. The pattern on paper stays identical and every copy already printed keeps working. Only where the short link sends people changes.
